Praia da Falésia

The headline location. Six kilometres of ochre cliffs running straight down to the sea — like nothing else in Europe. The colour contrast (red rock, white sand, blue water) makes for unforgettable photos.

Best for: absolutely everything — family shoots, couples, engagements, surprise proposals, wedding portraits. Our most-booked Albufeira location.

Best time of day: sunrise for empty beach and softest pastel light. Late afternoon (about two hours before sunset) for the famous red-cliff glow. Avoid midday — the sun is overhead and the cliffs lose their colour. The heat of summer midday can spoil the fun.

Light notes: the cliffs seem to be lit from within during the last hour before sunset. Sunrise is cooler-toned and dreamier.

Crowd notes: the western end (nearest Olhos de Água) is generally quieter than the busier central section. Sunrise is empty even in August.

Logistics: several free car parks along the length of the beach. Boardwalk access down to the sand at multiple points. Buggy- and wheelchair-friendly along the boardwalks. Bring water; facilities are only open in high season.

Praia de São Rafael

A small horseshoe-shaped beach framed by sculpted ochre cliffs and rock stacks rising out of the water. More intimate than the bigger Albufeira beaches, with calm shallow water and incredible texture in the cliffs behind you.

Best for: couples, small family shoots, maternity, bachelorette photosession, after-wedding photoshoot, engagement sessions, surprise proposals wanting a more intimate backdrop than Falésia.

Best time of day: late afternoon into golden hour — the cliffs catch beautiful warm light. Sunrise also works and is completely empty. Morning light brings up blue color of the ocean surrounded by bright golden cliffs.

Light notes: the cliffs pick up rich ochre and honeycomb tones in the last hour before sunset. The rock stacks in the water make natural photo composition easy.

Crowd notes: busy from mid-morning in summer and up till sunset. If you are planning your photosession in summer, early morning would be the most favourable time to get an empty beach.

Logistics: small free car park at the top of the cliff. A short staircase down to the beach — manageable for most, it is also buggy-friendly. About 10 minutes’ drive from central Albufeira. Permit? No permit required.

Olhos de Água

The village at the eastern end of Falésia beach, named for the freshwater springs — the “eyes of water” — that bubble up through the sand at low tide. Quieter than the main Falésia stretch, with a small working fishing harbour and a village-feel main street.

Best for: family shoots wanting a slightly more “authentic Algarve” feel, couples wanting quieter cliffs, anyone staying at Pine Cliffs, Balaia Beach Club, 3HB, Epic SANA or the eastern Albufeira resorts.

Best time of day: the hour after sunrise, when the springs are visible at low tide and the cliffs are catching first light. Late afternoon also works but the fishing boats are more active.

Light notes: the small bay creates soft, wrapped light in the mornings. The cliffs pick up warm tones later.

Crowd notes: much quieter than the central Falésia section. Even in summer, sunrise here is essentially empty.

Logistics: paid parking in the village or free parking above the cliffs. Short walk down to the beach. Steps rather than boardwalks — not fully buggy-friendly. Permit? No permit required.

Praia do Evaristo

A quieter cove between Praia da Galé and São Rafael, known for golden sand, calm shallow water, and a row of sculptural rock formations at the western end that throw beautiful shadow in the late afternoon. Less touristy than its neighbours — and directly adjacent to the W Algarve hotel, which sits on the clifftop just above.

Best for: family shoots wanting calm shallow water and space away from the busier beaches, couples wanting sculptural rock formations without the crowds at São Rafael, and guests of the W Algarve who want a session on their doorstep.

Best time of day: late afternoon into golden hour — the rock formations at the western end catch rich warm light and throw long shadows across the sand. Sunrise also works beautifully and is completely empty.

Light notes: the western rock formations are the key feature — they pick up deep shadow and colour in the last hour before sunset. Sunrise gives softer, cooler tones and mirror-still water.

Crowd notes: significantly quieter than São Rafael or Falésia. Even in summer you can usually find empty stretches, especially at sunrise and after 5pm.

Logistics: small free car park at the top of the cliff, then a short walk down to the sand. Some steps — not fully buggy-friendly but manageable. For W Algarve guests, the beach is a short walk down from the resort itself. Permit? No permit required for personal photography.

Praia de Santa Eulália

The softer, quieter beach just east of central Albufeira. Long stretch of golden sand, backed by low cliffs and pine, with fewer bars and a more relaxed atmosphere than the central beaches.

Best for: family shoots (particularly with younger kids), couples wanting a calm backdrop, guests of the Grande Real Santa Eulália or nearby resorts.

Best time of day: sunrise and the hour before sunset. Both work well; sunset here has beautiful warm light on the pine-topped cliffs.

Light notes: softer and less dramatic than Falésia. Good for shoots where the emphasis is on people rather than landscape.

Crowd notes: moderate in summer, quiet otherwise. Less busy than Oura even in peak season.

Logistics: large free car parks. Flat access via boardwalk. Fully buggy- and wheelchair-friendly. Permit? No permit required.

Albufeira Old Town

The white-washed lanes above the main beach — flower-draped balconies, blue-tiled archways, small squares, and steps down to the sand. Easy to walk, photogenic in every direction, and especially atmospheric just before sunset.

Best for: family shoots (especially with older kids or teenagers), couples wanting texture and character, anyone staying in central Albufeira who’d rather skip the drive to a beach.

Best time of day: late afternoon into the last hour of daylight. The lanes catch beautiful warm light as the sun drops, and the crowds start to thin as diners head indoors.

Light notes: narrow lanes create lovely contrast between sunlit walls and shaded cobbles. Blue tiles and painted facades pick up rich colour in the last light. Plenty of natural framing through arches and doorways.

Crowd notes: busy through the middle of the day, quieter early morning and after 7pm. We shoot here mostly late afternoon into evening.

Logistics: paid parking in the underground car parks near the beach; street parking a few minutes up the hill. Walking shoes helpful — the town is built on a hill with cobbled streets and staircases. Not fully buggy-friendly, but doable with an older child who can walk. Permit? No permit needed for public streets.

Pine Cliffs Resort

For guests of Pine Cliffs, the resort’s own grounds are one of our favourite shoot locations in Albufeira. The clifftop gardens, the dramatic wooden walkway along the top of the Falésia cliffs, and Praia da Falésia directly below combine into an incredible three-in-one shoot without leaving the resort.

Best for: family shoots for guests of Pine Cliffs, couples and engagements, wedding portraits for weddings held at the resort.

Best time of day: the hour before sunset. The cliffs pick up warm light and the gardens fall into soft shadow.

Light notes: the walkway and gardens give you plenty of options — hard light in the gardens, soft directional light on the walkway, dramatic backlight on the cliffs.

Crowd notes: private resort, so reliably quiet compared to the public beaches.

Logistics: for guests, everything is walkable within the resort. Concierge can coordinate meeting points. Our usual meeting point would be at the reception of the resort. For non-guests, access is generally not possible. Permit? Personal photography by guests is generally allowed; commercial or elaborate setups need resort permission. We handle this directly once you’ve booked.

Maria Luisa or Balaia Beach

For guests of Balaia (Grande Real Santa Eulália or Balaia Golf Village, Club Med de Balaia), the Maria Luisa beach and adjacent stretch of coastline offer a private-feeling backdrop with excellent afternoon light and quick access to Praia Maria Luisa below.

Best for: family shoots and couple sessions for guests of Balaia. Especially good for shoots that combine an on-resort session with a short walk down to the beach.

Best time of day: late afternoon into golden hour. The terrace and pool areas catch beautiful warm light, and the sea reflects the sky as the sun drops.

Light notes: open, wide light on the terrace; softer light in the shaded areas around the beach club.

Logistics: guests only. Meeting inside the resort is straightforward. If we need to combine with a public beach shoot, the walk down is 5 minutes. Permit? Personal photography by guests is generally allowed; we confirm directly with the resort before the shoot.
